Password for Universities and Colleges
Password tests are used to facilitate student recruitment and admission whilst upholding academic standards.
University And College Assessment
Since 2008, our tests have proven to be both valid and reliable for high stakes admissions testing as well as for internal assessment.

Since our launch in 2008 hundreds of universities and colleges have formed partnerships with Password to enhance or replace their own in-house testing. We help our partners move their assessments online, reducing costs and administrative burden and allowing the flexibility to deliver tests anywhere in the world.

For an overview of what Password can offer your institution, please watch our introductory video. If you’d like to find out more, our universities and colleges page below will provide you with further information.

Customisable High Quality Testing

Password English Language Tests

Password English language tests are designed and academically managed by
CRELLA (the Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment), a research group involved in the development and validation of many of the world’s most renowned English language assessments including IELTS and the Cambridge suite.

The tests are formally aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the international standard for describing language ability.

Password Maths Tests

Password Maths tests were developed following demand from institutions already using our English tests. In 2017, we undertook an extensive consultation with our partner universities, colleges and schools and worked with senior maths teachers from a consortium of leading UK independent schools to ensure the tests would enjoy the same academic validity and usability as our English tests.

All Password tests are proven to have extremely high levels of accuracy since their launch in 2008.

Password Tests and Test Modules

There are six standard Password tests which have been designed specifically for the higher education sector.

Password Skills is an English language proficiency test for university admission. It fulfils all Home Office requirements for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the UK. The test is aligned to the CEFR and reliably assesses the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The test is also used in various countries around the world to assess non-native English language teachers.

Password Skills Receptive is used to assess students at the end of a foundation, pre-sessional, pre-Masters or other pre-univiersity (pathway) programme. The test enables institutions who have well-developed speaking and writing assessments to augment their in-house testing with reliable CEFR aligned reading and listening assessments.

Password Knowledge is used to assess new students to ensure they have the English language skills necessary to successfully undertake their programmes of study. Students needing in-sessional support are identified quickly and cost-effectively. The test is aligned to the CEFR and delivers extremely accurate and reliable results.

Password Knowledge and Writing is amongst the most widely used English language assessments for admission into university preparation (pathway) programmes. The test is aligned to the CEFR.

Password Reading and Writing is used for various purposes including for admission to Higher National Diploma (HND) and vocational university programmes. It is also often used to assess the reading and writing abilities of students who are returning to education. The test is aligned to the CEFR.

Password Maths is used both for admission and to assess new students on arrival. It is a modular test, consisting of a choice of different test modules set at different levels.

Message from our Head of University Partnerships

I have worked in the Higher Education sector for nearly ten years in roles from marketing and student recruitment to development and student retention.  Most recently I have been involved in promoting UK degrees and recruiting students from all over the world, working for the University of Hertfordshire, Loughborough University and City, University of London.

In consultations with university agent networks over the past few years I heard over and over again that the universities favoured by agents are those who can avoid the unnecessary English language barriers raised by traditional “test centre” tests and offer a high quality, and easy to use, alternative. It was because of this, whilst I was in my role as Regional Manager at Hertfordshire, that I sought out Password as a marketing tool to aid our recruitment efforts whist maintaining academic standards.

After partnering with Password, I started using the Password Skills test to quickly and conveniently assess the English levels of prospective students I met whilst visiting their countries on recruitment trips.  Our country managers and agents (under university supervision) also used the tests to get an accurate report on students’ language skills within a couple of days.

Now, as part of the Password team, I have a greater insight into the consultative processes and academic rigor that goes into the Password suite of tests as well as a wider understanding of the many purposes for which the tests are used.  In my role I manage our partnerships with universities and colleges across the world and will be the point of contact for new partners looking to explore options for testing their students. I am always happy or meet to share more detailed information so please get in touch.
